SHE/HER
Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama
About Bettina:
I am a leading expert in intercultural communication, implicit bias, health equity and community development and a dynamic speaker and facilitator. After almost two decades of working at Research I universities, I shattered paradigms regarding the role of healthcare institutions in transforming the quality of life of residents in communities they serve as CEO of a clinic that served patients regardless of their ability to pay. I began a movement to improve the built environment and perceptions in a small industrial community through capacity building of stakeholders, cultural arts, social and traditional media.
What she’d like to see happen during the first 100 days of the next presidential administration:
Our region needs to attract resources and the attention of national funders. We need a strategy to address the regions poor health outcomes and overall quality of life.
Bettina’s advice for journalists who want to cover Appalachia:
Keep an open mind. Don’t believe everything you have previously read or watched on television. You probably have unconscious biases from watching how the region is portrayed.
